Geneseo Community

Geneseo is located in Western New York and plays a significant role in New York's history. Geneseo's history is rich in tradition since its founding in 1832. Located in the Genesee River Valley bordered by the nearby Finger Lakes in the county of Livingston, just 30 miles south of Rochester, NY, the majority of the village of Geneseo is designated a National Landmark Historical Preservation District. The name "Geneseo" comes from the Native American word, "Gen-nis-he-yo", which means "pleasant banks" or "beautiful valley". Geneseo is a friendly community with abundant human and natural resources that sits in a setting of stunning landscapes and productive farms. The beautiful pastoral countryside of agricultural lands in these townships creates scenic vistas. Lovely hills, fields, and waterways support a thriving agriculture and afford lively recreational opportunities. As the Livingston County seat, the Village of Geneseo is also home to numerous county offices and the Livingston County Courthouse.

The Geneseo Central School District campus and The State University College at Geneseo are located in the Village of Geneseo. Both are integral parts of the community. The Central School District works closely with the Geneseo community and the college has a nationwide reputation for excellence and is known for the variety of educational, cultural, and athletic opportunities.
