Literacy Assessments Used

Grades K-5
  • Overall, the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessments are used. These include Benchmark writing pieces that are aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards, ongoing writing pieces to assess the student's writing and ongoing informal Running Records.
  • The Fountas & Pinnell Text Level Gradient is also used to determine where student's reading levels should be for each grade. At Geneseo, their overall goal as a district is to have 90% of students at or above grade level by grade 3. This tool helps teachers map an appropriate progression of reading through the year, giving November, March, and June's recommended levels for below, approaching, on grade and exceeding reading abilities.

- There are also a few additional assessments used, based on grade level. -

Grades K-2
  • The Early Literacy Profile Assessment, or ELP, is used. This assessment was made by the teachers and the Director of Learning to make sure the points they were expecting the students to know were being assessed and evaluated throughout the school year. This ensures that all students are given the tools and skills to build on their foundation as they move up through the grade levels.

Grades K-3
  • Geneseo has the students complete the Acuity online assessment. This is more of an assessment of the teachers performance that year, rather than evaluated the students ability level.

Grades 4-5
  • Students also have ELA assessments that are regionally developed.
