How Literacy is Used in the Geneseo Community


The Geneseo community has an abundance of resources for literacy instruction and support. The following are community resources and the programs and activities offered of each:
  • The Wadsworth Library: Wadsworth Library Website
    • Adults:
      • Book Club (meets 1 night per month)
      • Ecumenical Book Review (meets 1 night per month)
    • Teens:
      • Website provides teen book suggestions
      • Free SYNC audiobook downloads
    • Young Children:
      • Books and Babies (ages 6 months-2 years)
      • Toddler Tales (ages 2-4)
      • Preschool Story Time (ages 3-5)
    • Other Activities/Programs:
      • Games (Ex: Life Size Candy Land)
      • Summer Reading Programs
      • Programs offered during Geneseo Central School breaks (Winter/Spring)

  • Geneseo Central School District:
    • The school district will occasionally bring in authors of children's books for read alouds and "meet the author" events.

  • SUNY Geneseo:
    • SUNY Geneseo (especially within the Education Department) promotes many opportunities for the students in both undergraduate and graduate programs to volunteer at KidStart (now closed) and at Geneseo Central School District. These opportunities involve reading to younger children or other types of literacy instruction.

  • Local Festivals:
    • Geneseo offers local art and music festivals throughout the year that at times foster literacy opportunities, such as child entertainers that do read/sing-a-longs.

  • Newspapers:
